Migrate Data, part 1 – AutoDesk Inventor Studio Video Tutorials

Hello! I hope you are enjoying the World Cup games. I’ve just got the Netherlands vs Brazil game streaming whilst writing this article. A good game doesn’t mean you can’t take a few minutes to learn something new.  So, welcome back to our AutoDesk Inventor Studio Video Tutorials series. In this article, I’ll take up the topic of data migration.

You may have created a lot of custom appearance and material items in your libraries, and when it’s time to upgrade to the newest version of AutoDesk Inventor, then what? In this tutorial, I’ll talk about how to migrate appearance and material data from previous versions of AutoDesk Inventor.

Before we do so, we’ll learn where Inventor stores data. Let’s go to the Tools tab > Application Options.

Now, let’s go to the File tab of the Application Options dialog window:

Here is the path where design data is stored:

Let’s cancel out of this window and go the Get Started tab. Click the Projects button:

Here’s the Projects dialog window, and in the bottom pane of this dialog window are various properties of your project. You can make changes from this dialog window by right-clicking on each property and selecting any additional option from the contextual menu. Notice the nodes for the assigned appearance and material libraries for this project. When you mouse over each you see the full path location of the libraries. If you right click on the library nodes, you’ll be able to modify the assignment of the libraries. When you’re done, well, click Done.
